Every flower tells a story, and that story can change between Western and Chinese traditions. Here’s a quick guide to the most popular bouquet blooms so you can choose the perfect message for the occasion.
| Flower | Western meaning | Chinese / Asian meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 🌹 Rose | Love and romance (the meaning shifts with the colour) | Red roses mean love, luck and happiness; the top choice for romance. See our full rose colour and number guide. |
| 🌷 Tulip | Perfect, declared love, especially in red | Warmth and happiness; a positive, well-loved gift. |
| 🌻 Sunflower | Adoration, loyalty and happiness | Good fortune, vitality and a long, happy life; a very auspicious, upbeat choice. |
| 🌸 Peony | Romance, prosperity and good fortune | The “king of flowers”: wealth, honour and high romance. Hugely auspicious and a favourite for weddings. |
| 🌼 Lily | Purity and refined beauty (white lilies also for sympathy) | A symbol of a happy, lasting marriage and union; considered lucky for weddings. |
| 🌺 Orchid | Luxury, beauty, strength and love | Nobility, integrity, refinement and friendship; also linked to a happy family. |
| 💐 Carnation | Love and fascination; pink for a mother’s love | Also a symbol of motherly love; white carnations can be linked to mourning. |
| 🌼 Chrysanthemum | Cheerfulness, friendship and joy (a popular Mother’s Day flower in Australia) | Traditionally linked to mourning and funerals, so best avoided as a celebratory gift, though also a symbol of longevity. |
| 🐉 Snapdragon | Grace, strength and resilience; protection from deception | Inner strength and standing tall through hard times; a thoughtful “you’ve got this” gift. |
| 🌾 Stock | Lasting beauty, affection and a happy life; a bond of lasting love | Enduring affection and a contented, happy life together. |
| 🌿 Banksia (native) | Australian icon: resilience, courage and the beauty of the wild | Admired as an exotic, distinctive bloom; long-lasting and well suited to dried arrangements. |
💡 Good to know: In Chinese tradition, chrysanthemums and white flowers are associated with funerals and mourning, so they’re best avoided as romantic or celebratory gifts. Red and pink blooms, along with lilies and peonies, are considered especially lucky for weddings, romance and happy occasions.

From our bench
Not every bouquet starts with a celebration. Sometimes it starts with a phone call.
Recently we received an order from a customer living overseas who wanted to surprise her mum here on the Gold Coast. They hadn’t seen each other in person for years, but she wanted her mum to know she was thinking of her. We carefully selected soft seasonal blooms, added a handwritten message, and delivered the flowers that same afternoon.
A few hours later, we received a message saying there were tears, smiles and a very long phone call.
It’s a lovely reminder that flowers aren’t just flowers. Sometimes they’re hugs that travel thousands of kilometres.
Honest answers to the questions we get most often.

Most bouquets and arrangements last 5–7 days with good care — out of direct sun, cool water changed every couple of days, and a fresh trim on the stems. Some blooms (lilies, chrysanthemums, native flowers) routinely go 10+ days. Care instructions are included with every order.
