Orchids

Their sculptural beauty makes orchids a favourite for birthdays, thank-yous, corporate gifts and sympathy alike. Surprisingly low-maintenance, a potted orchid keeps giving long after other flowers have faded.

How to Care for an Orchid Plant

Orchids are easier than they look. Follow these five basics and yours will thrive:

  1. Water once a week. Let the potting mix dry out almost completely, then water thoroughly and let it drain. Never leave the roots sitting in water — overwatering is the number one orchid killer.
  2. Give it bright, indirect light. A spot near a window with filtered light is perfect. Keep it out of harsh, direct sun, which scorches the leaves.
  3. Keep it warm and humid. Orchids love our Gold Coast climate. A kitchen or bathroom with good light suits them well.
  4. Feed it lightly. A little orchid fertiliser every couple of weeks during the growing season keeps it healthy.
  5. Leave it be. Orchids don’t like being moved or fussed over. Find a happy spot and let it settle.

How to Make Your Orchid Rebloom

When the flowers drop, your orchid isn’t dead — it’s just resting. Here’s how to bring it back into bloom:

  1. Don’t toss it. Keep watering and caring for it as normal once the flowers fall.
  2. Trim the spent stem. Cut the flower spike back to about an inch above the base, or just above a healthy node to encourage a new side shoot.
  3. Give it a cool night. A slight drop in night-time temperature (around 5–8°C cooler) for a few weeks is what triggers reblooming.
  4. Keep feeding. Continue with a little orchid fertiliser to fuel new growth.
  5. Be patient. A new flower spike can take a couple of months to appear. Keep it bright and cared for, and it’ll reward you.

Orchids — FAQs

Honest answers to the questions we get most often.

How long do orchid flowers last?

Orchids are wonderfully long-lasting. A cut orchid arrangement stays beautiful well beyond most flowers, and the blooms on a potted phalaenopsis (moth orchid) can last two to three months. With a little care, a potted orchid will then rebloom again and again.

How often should I water an orchid plant?

Less than you'd think. Most indoor orchids need watering roughly once a week, and the biggest mistake is overwatering. Let the potting mix dry out almost completely between waterings, water thoroughly, then let any excess drain away so the roots never sit in water.

Where should I keep my orchid?

Somewhere bright but out of harsh, direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. A spot near a window with filtered light is ideal. Orchids also love a little humidity, so a kitchen or bathroom with good light suits them well.

Why has my orchid stopped flowering, and will it bloom again?

It's completely normal for an orchid to drop its flowers and rest. It hasn't died. Keep caring for it and most orchids will rebloom. To encourage new flowers, leave it in a bright spot with a slight drop in night-time temperature, and feed it with a little orchid fertiliser.

Are orchids hard to look after?

Not at all, once you know the golden rule: don't overwater. Orchids are far more forgiving than their reputation suggests, and a potted orchid is genuinely one of the easiest flowering plants to keep alive and reblooming.

Do orchids suit the Gold Coast climate?

They do, more than most. Orchids love warmth and humidity, so our subtropical Gold Coast conditions are a natural fit, and many varieties will even grow happily on a shaded patio or in the garden.

What's the difference between a cut orchid arrangement and a potted orchid plant?

A cut arrangement is styled with orchid stems for an immediate, elegant display that lasts for weeks. A potted plant is living, so with simple care it reblooms for years, making it the better choice if you want a lasting gift.
