Plant Care Secrets: How to Keep Your Indoor Plants Thriving

You don’t need a green thumb, just a few insider habits. Here are the secrets the pros swear by:

  1. Underwater, don’t overwater. More indoor plants die from too much water than too little. When in doubt, wait. Check the soil with your finger and only water when the top inch feels dry.
  2. Match the plant to the spot, not the other way around. Notice how much light a spot gets before you choose a plant for it. A sun-lover will sulk in a dark corner, and a shade-lover will scorch on a bright windowsill.
  3. Dust the leaves. Plants breathe and soak up light through their leaves, so a layer of dust slows them down. Wipe them gently with a damp cloth every few weeks and watch them perk up.
  4. Rotate for even growth. Plants lean toward the light. Give yours a quarter turn every week or so and it’ll grow full and even instead of lopsided.
  5. Use a pot that drains. Roots sitting in waterlogged soil rot fast. Make sure water can escape, and tip out anything that pools in the saucer.
  6. Group them together. Plants release moisture, so clustering a few together creates a little humid microclimate they love, especially handy near drying air-conditioning.
  7. Feed in the warm months. Plants do most of their growing in spring and summer, so a little plant food then goes a long way. Ease right off in the cooler months when they rest.
  8. Don’t rush to repot. A newly bought or gifted plant needs time to settle. Let it adjust for a few weeks before moving or repotting it.
  9. Catch pests early. A quick weekly look over the leaves, including underneath, means you spot any pests before they spread.

🌴 Gold Coast tip: our humidity is a gift for tropical plants, but air-conditioning is their enemy. Keep plants out of the direct path of the air-con and they’ll thank you.

Indoor Plant — FAQs

Honest answers to the questions we get most often.

How often should I water my indoor plants?

It depends on the plant, but the golden rule is to check before you water. Push a finger about an inch into the soil, and only water if it feels dry. Most indoor plants prefer to dry out a little between waterings, and overwatering is the most common cause of plant problems.

What are the best low-maintenance indoor plants?

For beginners, you can't go wrong with devil's ivy (pothos), snake plant, ZZ plant and peace lily. They tolerate a range of light, forgive the occasional missed watering, and still look fantastic. If you'd like something flowering, see our orchids — surprisingly low-maintenance once you know the trick. Ask us and we'll point you to the hardiest options.

Which indoor plants are good for low light?

Snake plants, ZZ plants, pothos and peace lilies all cope well in lower-light spots like hallways and bathrooms. No indoor plant thrives in total darkness, but these handle shade far better than most.

Do indoor plants help clean the air?

Many indoor plants help freshen indoor air and add humidity, and they're proven mood-boosters too. Peace lilies, spider plants and pothos are popular picks for exactly that reason.

Are your indoor plants safe for pets?

Some are, some aren't. Plants like spider plant, calathea and parlour palm are generally pet-friendly, while popular plants such as pothos, peace lily and monstera can be harmful if chewed. If you have curious cats or dogs, tell us and we'll recommend a pet-safe option.

Why are my plant's leaves turning yellow or brown?

Yellow leaves usually mean overwatering, while crispy brown tips often point to underwatering, dry air or too much direct sun. Adjust watering first, since that's the most common culprit, and move the plant out of harsh sun if needed.

Do indoor plants suit the Gold Coast climate?

Very well. Our warm, humid subtropical conditions suit a wide range of tropical indoor plants, which often thrive here with less effort than in cooler, drier climates. Just watch out for air-conditioning, which can dry them out.
