From our bench
Several months after buying a native arrangement, a customer came back into the shop carrying one of the banksias from her bouquet. To our surprise, it still looked fantastic. The flowers had naturally dried at home, keeping their shape, texture and character long after the fresh blooms had faded.
Australian natives have a wonderful ability to age gracefully, which is one reason we love working with them. That conversation inspired us to share some of our favourite tips for drying native flowers, so you can enjoy them for months, or even years, after they’re received.
Honest answers to the questions we get most often.
Native flowers are Australian-grown blooms like banksia, kangaroo paw, waratah, billy buttons and wattle, often arranged alongside proteas and leucadendrons. They're known for their bold textures, striking shapes and incredible longevity compared to traditional flowers.
Natives are some of the longest-lasting flowers you can buy. With good care, many stay fresh for two weeks or more, often well outlasting roses and other soft blooms. That makes them excellent value and a favourite for homes and offices.
Keep them in clean, fresh water and change it every couple of days, trim the woody stems on an angle, and keep them out of direct sun and away from air-conditioning. Most natives prefer not to be overcrowded, so give the stems a little room.
Beautifully. Banksia, protea, billy buttons, kangaroo paw and many other natives dry and preserve wonderfully, keeping their shape and colour for months or years. If you love the look, see our dried flowers range, which features many native varieties.
They're a brilliant fit. Natives are hardy by nature and cope far better with our heat and humidity than delicate imported blooms, so they hold up well both as cut flowers and in arrangements.
