What Do Roses Mean? Colour & Number Guide

Roses carry a message, and that message changes between Western and Chinese traditions. Here’s a quick guide so you can choose the perfect bunch for the occasion and the person.

Rose colours and their meaning

Colour Western meaning Chinese / Asian meaning
🔴 RedLove, romance, passionThe luckiest colour of all — love, happiness and good fortune. The top choice for romance, weddings and celebrations.
🌸 PinkAdmiration, gratitude, sweetnessGentle, romantic love. A popular choice for new and young romance.
WhitePurity, new beginnings, sympathyTraditionally linked to mourning and funerals, so best avoided as a romantic or celebratory gift.
💛 YellowFriendship, joy, cheerFriendship, but also associated with farewell, so less common for romance.
🧡 OrangeEnthusiasm, energy, desireWarmth and happiness.
💜 LavenderLove at first sight, enchantmentSomething special and unique.

What the number of roses means

Number Western meaning Chinese / Asian meaning
1You’re the oneYou are my only one
2Mutual loveGood things come in pairs: harmony and togetherness
3I love you“I love you” (three words)
8Wealth and prosperity (sounds like “fortune”)
9Forever and everlasting (sounds like “long-lasting”)
12Be mine: the classic romantic gift (a dozen)A complete and full love
99Endless loveLove that lasts forever
100Wholehearted, devoted love100% complete love
108“Will you marry me?” — the traditional proposal number

💡 Good to know: In Chinese tradition, avoid giving 4 roses — the number sounds like the word for “death” and is considered unlucky. And while white roses are a beautiful Western gift, they’re traditionally a funeral flower in Chinese culture, so red or pink is the safer choice for romance and celebrations.

From our bench

The Valentine’s Day Standard He Couldn’t Escape

A few years ago, a young man came into the shop before Valentine’s Day with a big plan. It was his first Valentine’s with his girlfriend, and he wanted to make it unforgettable. His solution? One hundred roses.

We arranged them, delivered them, and everything went perfectly. The surprise was a success, and his girlfriend was so overwhelmed she cried.

The following year he returned, this time deciding to be a little more sensible. Instead of 100 roses, he ordered 24.

The next day, he walked back in looking slightly concerned. The flowers had been well received, but not quite as well as the year before. His girlfriend had cried again, but for a completely different reason: she was convinced he didn’t love her as much anymore, because she’d received fewer roses than on their first Valentine’s.

He looked at us and said, “I think I’ve made a terrible mistake.” Then he ordered another 100-rose arrangement.

Ever since, he’s returned every Valentine’s Day for 100 roses. What started as a romantic gesture became a tradition he can never escape.

It’s one of our favourite reminders that sometimes the biggest challenge isn’t choosing the perfect flowers — it’s living up to your own success.

Roses — FAQs

Honest answers to the questions we get most often.

How long do fresh roses last?

With good care, a fresh bunch of roses lasts around 5 to 7 days, sometimes longer. Keep them out of direct sun and away from air-conditioning, change the water every couple of days, and they'll stay looking their best. Care instructions are included with every order.

How do I make my roses last longer?

Trim about a centimetre off the stems on an angle every couple of days, change the water regularly, remove any leaves sitting below the waterline, and keep them somewhere cool and out of direct sunlight. Small habits, big difference.

What do the different rose colours mean?

Each colour carries its own message: red for love and romance, pink for admiration and gratitude, white for purity and sympathy, yellow for friendship and joy, and orange for enthusiasm. Not sure which suits the occasion? Call us on (07) 5632 8633 and we'll guide you.

How many roses should I send?

It depends on the message. A single rose says "you're the one," a dozen is the classic romantic gesture, two dozen says "I'm serious," and a hundred roses is the grand statement for a big milestone. We arrange everything from one stem to 100.

Can I get roses delivered same-day on the Gold Coast?

Yes. Order by 2pm and we deliver fresh roses across the Gold Coast the same day, with free delivery to all Gold Coast hospitals. Running late? Call us on (07) 5632 8633 and we'll do our best.

What colours of roses do you stock?

We carry red roses year-round, plus pink, white, yellow and seasonal shades depending on availability. If you're after a specific colour, leave a note at checkout or call ahead and we'll let you know what's freshest on the day.

Why do roses cost more around Valentine's Day?

Global demand for roses spikes dramatically in the lead-up to Valentine's Day, which lifts wholesale prices worldwide. We always pass on the best value we can, and ordering early helps you secure both a better price and your preferred colour.

Are your roses fresh and hand-arranged?

Always. Every rose bouquet and arrangement is hand-tied the morning of delivery by our florists in Southport, never pre-made or sitting in a box. A real florist on the bench, the way we've done it since 1996.

Can I add a vase, chocolates or a card to my roses?

Yes. You can add a vase, chocolates, a balloon or a personalised gift card at checkout, or call us on (07) 5632 8633 and we'll put a combo together. Browse our full bouquet range for more options.
